The minimum one-way fare of €5.80 applies to single-zone hops on ordinary routes—Como to Cernobbio, Tremezzo to Lenno, any adjacent pier pair within the same tariff band. Multi-zone crossings add €2.90 per additional zone, though the zone map itself remains unmarked at most ticket offices. Car ferries, which shuttle vehicles across the lake's narrowest points at Bellagio, Cadenabbia, and Varenna, charge per vehicle rather than per passenger: a standard car pays €13.50 regardless of how many people sit inside, making them the most economical option for groups. Ticket windows at major piers open at 07:00, but queues form well before the first departure during summer months and September weekends when day-trippers from Milan flood the system. Online booking through the Navigazione Laghi portal remains unavailable for ordinary routes—only private tour operators and seasonal express lines accept advance reservations. The lack of through-ticketing means passengers planning multi-stop itineraries must purchase separate fares at each transfer point, and ticket offices close between 12:30 and 14:00 at smaller villages, leaving automated kiosks as the only option during midday. Weekly passes exist but deliver marginal value unless you're making eight or more crossings: the seven-day card costs €44 for central basin access, breaking even only if you average more than one round trip per day.
