Navigazione Laghi operates the Como–Bellagio ferry route across a lake basin that plunges 410 metres below the waterline, deeper than any other body of water in Italy.
The public ferry network was electrified in 1952, but the route itself follows centuries-old trade corridors that connected silk merchants in Como with alpine passes into Switzerland. Today's hydrofoils complete the crossing in forty minutes, while slower passenger ferries take ninety, calling at Cernobbio, Moltrasio, and Torno en route.
Bellagio occupies the promontory where Lake Como's three branches converge — the geographic hinge that made it a strategic port under the Lombard kings and, later, a staging ground for Austrian military steamers. The village's grand hotels were built between 1870 and 1910 to house British and Russian aristocrats wintering in the mild lakeside climate, and their Belle Époque facades now define the waterfront skyline. Villa Melzi's neoclassical gardens, planted with Japanese maples and Egyptian lotus pools, stretch along the southern shore; Villa Serbelloni's terraced park occupies the hilltop above.
The Lake Como cruise to Bellagio departs from Como's Lido pier, a stone-and-glass terminal rebuilt in 1956 on the site of the old customs house. Ferries run hourly from 05:55 on weekdays, with reduced Sunday schedules beginning at 07:30. One-way passenger fares start at twelve euros forty cents, though rates fluctuate by vessel type — slower traghetti cost less than fast aliscafi. Tickets are sold at automated kiosks and the staffed ticket office; reservations are not required for public ferries, but seats fill quickly during April-to-October peak season.
Navigazione Laghi's fleet includes twenty-three vessels ranging from hundred-passenger launches to eight-hundred-seat car ferries. The route crosses open water for most of the journey, offering unobstructed views of Monte San Primo's 1,682-metre summit and the Pre-Alpine ridge that frames the lake's eastern shore. Seasonal boat tours often combine the public ferry leg with stops at lakeside villas and guided walks through Bellagio's medieval Salita Serbelloni, a cobbled lane lined with silk ateliers and ceramic workshops.
